If you, like me, have a legacy (read: free) G-Suite (Google Apps) account, you may have noticed that there are changes when using Docs, Sheets, or any of the Google apps. The error I was getting was that a lock screen was required on my mobile devices in order to be able to use Hangouts, Sheets, all those great things. The problem is that I don't want to dictate that to my users, so I wanted to turn that off.
I made use of the solution found on this site (opens new window). If you follow the instructions posted by Denis Lynch, then you should be able to continue to access your Google apps without a lock screen.
I'm sure that Google has their reasons for this, whether it's offering more mobile levers to pull (at a premium, of course), or actual security problems they hope to fix. So I would suggest that you do your homework on security problems around it, especially if you have sensitive information in your Google apps. If, like me, your organization just uses the Google infrastructure for personal use, maybe it makes sense to turn off the mobile device management that Google offers and has enabled by default.
