With a clean bill of health, I left the house for the first time since failing (passing?) my COVID test two weeks ago, and went to the Strathcona County Library used book sale. It isn't as extensive as the sale that the Edmonton Public Library puts on, or as big as it has been in years past, but there was still enough available to tire out my arms on the way back to the van. Between Lily and I, we pulled out 31 books, with Ollie and Kim grabbing a few each too.
Used book sales and used bookstores are some of the few legitimate places where I feel ok buying some books, where the author doesn't get a cut of my money. This is helpful for filling in the missing books in the Ender's Game series.
I did manage to find the last book in that series, as well as a couple in Raymond Feist's 30+-book Midkemia series. I won't be getting to any of those right away. I'm still five books away from the first Feist book I picked up in my current re-read, and I have only just started to think about an Ender's Game read-through.
Another non-first-book in a series that I picked up was Memory of Souls by Jenn Lyons. I listened to the first book in the series a couple of years ago, and I have the second in the series in my audiobook library, so this one is ready as soon as I get through book 2.
One book I could (and did) start right away is The Everything Book by Richard Kadrey. It's the first book in a series. I've read it before, and I bought it accidentally, mistaking it for book 2, but I'm enjoying it so much that I'll just keep reading.
I found out about Kadrey from Patrick Rothfuss's blog, back when I was checking every week or so for progress on book 3 of his series. Rothfuss had very complimentary things to say about Sandman Slim. I read that one, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Kadrey's books tend to feel like old pulp novels in tone, but they don't hit you over the head with it.
It was good to get out of the house and grab more introvert-fodder. I should be good for a couple months, anyway.
